The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has scheduled its Annual General Meeting (AGM) for September 28, the same day as the Asia Cup final. The general body will convene at 11:30 AM at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, where elections for key office-bearer posts will take place.
As confirmed in a circular from secretary Devajit Saikia, the elections will cover the positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Joint Secretary, and Treasurer.
Key Agenda of the AGM
Along with the elections, the agenda also includes:
- Formation of the Apex Council of the BCCI
- Setting up of the Governing Councils for the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Women’s Premier League (WPL)
- Induction of one representative of the General Body and two members of the Indian Cricketers’ Association into the Apex Council
The most crucial point of the AGM will be the selection of a new set of office-bearers, who will oversee Indian cricket for the next three years or until the proposed Sports Bill replaces the current constitution. It remains unclear whether fresh elections will be required once the Sports Bill comes into force.
Current Situation
- Secretary Devajit Saikia, who has served three years in BCCI administration, is expected to continue for another term.
- Treasurer Prabhtej Singh Bhatia (Chhattisgarh) and Joint Secretary Rohan Gauns Dessai (Goa), both in their first terms, are also likely to remain in office.
However, there is no clarity on who will take up the President and Vice-President roles. Former president Roger Binny stepped down in July upon turning 70, with Rajeev Shukla currently acting as interim president. Shukla’s future role, possibly including the IPL chairmanship, is yet to be decided.
Present IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal, who earlier served as BCCI treasurer (2019–2022), faces questions about a mandatory three-year cooling-off period after six consecutive years in office. Opinions differ on whether his current role qualifies as an office-bearer position, which will decide if he continues or steps aside.
